Thomas Mathiesen, born 1933, is a professor em. of sociology of law at the University of Oslo, Norway. Mathiesen has done extensive research in prisons, sociology of law, media sociology and in the sociology of power. Among his many books are The Politics of Abolition (1974), Law, Society and Political Action (1980), Silently Silenced (2004) and Prison on Trial (3rd ed. 2006, also translated into many other languages). He is currently finalizing a book entitled Towards a Surveillant Society – The Rise of Surveillance Systems in Europe, to be published by Waterside Press in 2013. He is a co-founder of KROM – The Norwegian Association for Penal Reform.
